Four Reasons to Be Here Opening Night

July 31, 2017 by redbranchtheaterco Leave a Comment

If you haven’t already decided which performance of Lysistrata Jones to attend, you should definitely consider this Friday, August 4th— opening night! We’re giving you four simple reasons to make Red Branch your theatre destination this Friday.

  1. Opening Night Reception
Join the cast and crew in the rehearsal studio following the performance for a champagne toast and celebration courtesy of our restaurant partners at The Iron Bridge Wine Co.
  2. Dining Vouchers
Speaking of Iron Bridge, your ticket to the show entitles you to a FREE dining certificate from The Iron Bridge Wine Company. That’s right– your ticket essentially pays for itself. The only catch? You’ve got to come to the show to claim it. Get yours on Friday and use it for dinner on Saturday!
  3. Another Area Premiere
Like Heathers last summer, Lysistrata Jones is only the most recent in a long history of area premieres at Red Branch Theatre Company (in fact, this whole season is full of area premieres). If you weren’t lucky enough to catch Lysistrata Jones on Broadway, you’ll be the first in the area to see it on opening night.
  4. High-Flying Adventure
Beat the heat by coming inside and joinng us for some high-octane summer fun. We keep the drama onstage at Red Branch, and this musical comedy is the perfect antidote for any blues you might be experiencing outside of the theatre– for a price that can’t be beat!

What are you waiting for? Opening night tickets are going quickly. Get yours while you still can!

Get to Know the Cast and Crew of Lysistrata Jones

July 27, 2017 by redbranchtheaterco Leave a Comment

We’re counting down to the opening of Lysistrata Jones by getting to know some of the folks behind-the-scenes and on stage. Choreographer Brandon Glass sat down and shared a couple of things about his process and background the other day. Let’s hear what he has to say….

….About his Approach to Choreography and this Project

“When I was approached to choreograph for this production I agreed and was driven to not make it a cheesy/typical ‘play about cheerleaders.’ Dancers and cheerleaders are athletes, so I pushed this cast to execute quality moves and dance numbers that you would see at competitions, or showcases for dance.  My process included a semi-intense, but very short work-out segment to push them physically and mentally to new limits. I also encourage team work-outs because they all struggle together. A sense of unity and chemistry will always help a group to find common ground and realize that they all endure the same hurdles to reach their final goal, so why not encourage each other along the way.”

…About his Background

“I was born in Germany, and moved around a lot as a military child. I didn’t grow up in a studio dancing. I wasn’t at recitals every week, or showcases every month. My first class wasn’t until I was about 18. From there I started actually studying the different genres of dance and trying them out myself. I’m very musically inclined playing trumpet, drums and piano, and occasionally I like to ice skate. At the same time, I play my fair share of sports; basketball, soccer, diving, backyard baseball. I was always involved in a lot and wanted a taste of everything, it takes a lot of work to accomplish that, but there’s so much to learn along the way that at the end of it all, it is SO worth the work.”

Brandon is no stranger to Red Branch, having served as choreographer for last summer’s smash production of Heathers the Musical. Come see his latest work on stage from August 4-26 in Lysistrata Jones!

Mad Libs Live: a Primer

March 17, 2017 by redbranchtheaterco Leave a Comment

Did you know that Red Branch Theatre Company is presenting the first production of Mad Libs Live after its Off-Broadway run at New World Stages? Since this musical is undoubtedly new to you, we’ve assembled a primer to help you get acquainted with all things Mad Libs Live before you visit the show, which runs now through April 8th in Columbia, MD.

  • Adjective: It modifies a noun. Like “silly, happy clown.” Words that you write on the green slips of paper to be pulled out from the green pail during the show.
  • Adult Performances: All Saturday 8 pm performances and Thursday 7:30 pm performances will allow for “no-holds-barred” word submission. Bring some grownups and submit some grownup words. Our teen superstars will say [just about] anything to complete their songs and scenes at these performances only. Not appropriate for audience members under the age of 17.
  • Adverb: It modifies an adjective or verb like “quickly choose” or “we’re extremely bright.” Words that you write on the pink slips of paper to be pulled out of the pink pail during the show.
  • Family-Friendly Performances: All Saturday 2 pm performances and Sunday 3 pm performances are geared towards family audiences. These are the best shows for your youngest theatregoers to enjoy. Additionally, all Friday performances will be suitable for all ages.
  • Mad Lib: a phrasal template word game where one player prompts others for a list of words to substitute for blanks in a story before reading the [often comical or nonsensical] story aloud. The game is frequently played as a party game or a pastime. It was invented in the United States, and more than 110 million copies of the  books have been sold since the series was first published in 1958.
  • Noun: a person, place, or thing. Like “doctor,” “zoo,” or “string.” Words that you write on the yellow slips of paper to be pulled out from the yellow pail during the show.
  • Parents’ Night Out PJ Party: One of our most popular offerings. Drop the kids off from 7-11 pm at the theatre on March 24th or 31st. They will be supervised by Drama Learning Center staff during the show and then engaged in fun activities afterwards. Parents get a night to themselves and kids get a night of theatre fun with friends. It’s a win-win situation!
  • Sloppy Saturday: Saturday 8 pm performances will begin with pre-show adult beverages in the lobby at 7:30 pm. Bring a government-issued ID proving you’re of legal age and few dollars to make a donation.
  • Thirsty Thursday: See “Sloppy Saturday.” Thirsty Thursday pre-show happy hours will be held starting at 6:30 pm on March 30th and April 6th next door in our rehearsal studio. Same rules as “Sloppy Saturday” apply here.
  • Verb: an action being done. Like “sleep,” or “jump,” or “run.” Words that you write on the blue slips of paper to be pulled out from the blue pail during the show.

Now that you know a little more about Mad Libs Live and Red Branch’s production, it’s time to get your tickets! Pick your performance and buy them today.

New Apprenticeship Program Launch!

December 19, 2016 by redbranchtheaterco Leave a Comment

Red Branch is thrilled to unveil our new apprenticeship program!

Application materials are now online and will be accepted beginning on January 15th. Are you interested in hearing more about what it means to be a Red Branch apprentice? Here’s a quick note from Founding Apprentice Sarah Luckadoo outlining what she has been up to since she arrived here this summer.

“I recently graduated from Western Carolina University with a BFA in Acting in May of 2016. Towards the end of my senior year, I wanted my next step to be part of an environment where I could continue to learn and expand on my academic training. I began researching apprenticeship programs in the Baltimore/Washington Metropolitan Area. I’ve always been taught that if I really wanted acting to be my career, I’d have to be willing to always learn, always grow, and always work harder than anyone else. I was drawn to Red Branch because I felt that their mission and the work that they do coincides with my artistic goals. So… long story short, I flew to Maryland in April and saw RBTC’s production of Sweeney Todd and met with Managing Director Tiffany Underwood Holmes. After chatting, we both decided that we were ready to build a program and working relationship that would benefit one another. Since moving here in July, I’ve been involved in everything from teaching workshops and camps to serving in various production roles in Mainstage productions of Heathers: the Musical, Evil Dead: the Musical, and The Happy Elf. I recommend this program to anyone that is truly passionate both about theatre and making it as an artist in an ever-changing market. If you love what you do and you’re willing to work hard and learn every day, then this is the place for you.”

If you’re interested in applying, download application materials here.

3 Reasons to have a Happy Holiday at The Happy Elf

December 2, 2016 by redbranchtheaterco Leave a Comment

Now that December is here, there are so many events and responsibilities competing for your family’s attention. Take a break from it all at The Happy Elf. Here are three reasons why The Happy Elf will make your holiday season a little happier this year.

  1. Meet Santa after a matinee – Santa’s in the show, so we’ve expanded our popular “Santa Sightings” to every matinee. Come up on stage after the show and meet Santa. Snap a picture with him on our festive set as a great holiday memory of your time at Red Branch.
  2. Leave the Kids to Have Their Own Fun – On Fridays, drop the kids off from 7-11 PM to watch the show with other friends and teaching artists from our sister company, Drama Learning Center. After the show, kids will get autographs from the cast, have a dance party, create holiday-themed arts and crafts, and more at our Parents’ Night Out PJ Party. The pajamas are optional, but the fun is not. This has been a great staple in Red Branch’s family theatre offerings year after year. Don’t miss out!
  3. Enjoy a NEW Holiday Work – We all have a special place in our heart for holiday staples like A Christmas Carol, The Nutcracker, Miracle on 34th Street… you name it. Won’t it be fun to see something that you’ve probably never seen before? With a jazzy, energetic score by Harry Connick, Jr. and quirky characters like Eubie the Elf and all of his friends at the North Pole, this isn’t a holiday favorite YET. It will be once you see it, though. So try out something new (and bring the whole family with you). You won’t regret it!

Want more information about The Happy Elf? Check it out here.

Or buy your tickets now! There are only eight chances to catch this great family-friendly holiday show, so get your tickets while you still can.
